H. Scott Cushing, Photographer and Graphic Artist

Picture
H. Scott Cushing is a published photographer and graphic artist. Many of his designs have been reproduced for the gift industry and sold in national retail stores.

The many incarnations of Scott Cushing run the gamut from student, athlete, hippie, Navy seaman, Scuba enthusiast & traveler, husband, father, friend and artist. During the course of these incarnations he has lived in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Florida, South Carolina, Westchester and traveled through the Caribbean and Europe.
His love of the beach and ocean took him on long summer rides to Jones Beach on Long Island in NY. When he married he settled just 10 miles from Jones Beach and over the past 30 years has photographed that beach as well as other areas on Long Island.

"I believe I have a unique view of the world and try to portray that through my photography. I believe that in some way, though subtle, I tell the story of my life and times through my art. At times peaceful and serene at others frenetic and disordered. My life has brought me many places and I have met many interesting people all of whom have influenced the eyes through which I view the world and create my work. The solitude of the beach, the Rorschach appearance of the clouds and the vibrant colors of fall on Long Island represent some of the stories and sensations I experience and draw upon for inspiration."

My abstracts are an area in which I use vibrant color and repetition as the major design element. Through the digital process my images are created with ultimate flexibility and intense manipulation.

Joyce Erb, Artist

Picture
Joyce is a lawyer turned oil painter who has made her home on Daniel Island since 2014.  Her journey from practicing attorney to artist was gradual and unexpected, yet every twist and turn of her life experience, including her move from the New York City area to Charleston, has informed her artistic passion and her style as a painter.

After growing up in the charming port town of Annapolis, Maryland, Joyce went to law school in Boston and ultimately lived and worked in the New York City area for most of her life.   When she settled in Charleston, her artwork took an inspired leap forward.

“I find the artistic community in Charleston incredibly stimulating.  The abundance of galleries and artists contribute to a palpable creative atmosphere in this town.” Joyce’s inspirations include the sea, architecture, interiors, florals and still life. On any given day, her work as a painter may involve watching an individual magnolia blossom develop from the day before, tracking the day’s shadows as they move across a clump of trees, or observing the color of light in the marsh change from afternoon till evening. "I don't know how else to describe this aspect of painting other than as an amazing luxury."

“I have met so many special people along this part of my journey, but two in particular stand out for their support and encouragement.  I owe much to Charleston artist Leslie Pratt-Thomas for her generous instruction.   And I am proud to be a member of the devoted cadre of students mentored by Laurie Meyer. Both Leslie and Laurie have been superb teachers and are treasured friends.”

Joyce is a member of the Daniel Island Artist Guild, the Mount Peasant Artist Guild, and is an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild.  Her work is available at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery at 160 East Bay Street downtown and through her web site at JoyceErb.com. She lives with her family on Daniel Island.

Peter Finger, Artist and Photographer

Picture
Peter grew up in the shadows of the Catskill Mountains in Upstate New York. He started painting in his teens and was influenced by the artists of the  Hudson River School who painted the wild landscapes of New England in the early 19th Century. Finger would trace the steps of these romantic painters and create his own interpretation of the scenes.

While studying fine art and art education in college, Finger would continue his Catskill Mountain journeys , now armed with a camera. Photography soon played a critical role in his development as an artist. His Super-realistic paintings were based on his photographs and were quickly sought after by collectors, corporations and galleries. Upon graduation he quickly landed an art teaching job.

While still teaching he worked as a photojournalist, workshop leader and artist. Fast forward after years of teaching and several years at Apple Computer, he opened his own fine art photography business. Along with his corporate photography, he still makes time to create digital fine art prints and one of a kind embellished giclee prints.

Peter lives on Daniel Island and has recently built a new studio for both painting and photography. Please visit my website at www.peterfingerartist.com and www.peterfingerweddings.com

Bill Goff, Photographer

Picture
William (Bill) Goff was born in Charleston, WV and attended West Virginia University where he received three degrees…BS in Electrical Engineering, an MS in Computer Design, and an MS in Engineering Management.  After graduation, he worked for Union Carbide Corp. (UCC) for 35 years, General Electric (GE) for 7 years, and retired after 9 years as a consultant to the State of Texas for major capital projects.

He started his photography career at the age of 8 when he was given a No. 1A Pocket Kodak (bellows type) camera to take B&W pictures on 120 film at his summer camps.  Soon after, he moved up to an Argus C3 35mm fixed lens camera and also switched to color photography.  With a lot of practice on this camera, he purchased his first SLR camera…a Pentax DTL1000 and started buying and practicing with multiple lenses. From there, he acquired a Bronica medium-format camera for his studio work.  His focus then turned to travel photography while on foreign work trips to Sweden, Australia, Belgium, China, and Japan.
His move into digital photography started with his first digital camera…an Olympus E10.  This quickly led into Nikon cameras, lenses and flashes…he now shoots Nikon exclusively.

While at UCC, he photographed mostly industrial subjects…instruments, control rooms, and computer rooms.  While at GE, he switched to corporate subjects…conferences, buildings, receptions, sales support, and employee photos.
His professional (paid) work started with a combination of weddings, receptions, and then college graduations.  Twice a year, he photographed both the Texas School of Business and Remington College graduations…individual and class photos.
Union Carbide had Bill traveling all over the world which gave him an opportunity to take a lot of photos in a lot of different countries.  He also took photos while on trips with close friends to create 15 travel books…together these travels produced books that included: France & The Loire Valley; Italy & Sicily; The Greek Islands, Croatia & Northern Italy; Portugal, Spain, Gibraltar & Morocco; San Miguel de Allende Mexico; Provence & The Cote d’Azure; Germany & Austria; Rhine River Valley (Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, & Switzerland);  Sedona (Grand Canyon) and The Waterways of the Tsars (Moscow to St. Petersburg Russia).  His latest books include photos taken on trips to Kuwait and Jordan to create a Middle East book; photos taken while working in China and Japan to create a Far East book; photos on his travels to Germany and the Czech Republic to photograph the Christmas Markets, and the latest book on his travels across Canada (Toronto to Vancouver) and Victoria Island including a special book on the Butchart Gardens.

In 2010, he started photographing birds at the local Galveston Island FeatherFest…a week long opportunity to shoot local birds in their natural habitat with experts from all over the world…plus they offered courses in improving these photos.  While in Texas, he belonged to one of the largest and most active photo clubs in Texas…the Bay Area Photo Club.  The monthly club assignment contests (with formal judging) helped improve his eye for a great photo.

Currently, he belongs to two local photo clubs…Lowcountry Photo Club and 21stCentury Photo Club.

"I grew up drawing bats, planes, submarines and sharks.  Later in my first year in college I caused trouble with my first unofficial artwork, an abstract expressionist painting on the walls of my dorm room balcony at USC in 1985.  Iended up transferring and graduated from the College of Charleston with a Fine Arts degree."

Michael's work in oils have been shown in Charleston and a gallery in Hamburg, Germany.  His most recent works have included acrylics, art glass and Raku pottery.

For me, it’s not artwork, it’s art play.
In real life, for almost 15 years, I’ve had a career in Advertising. I’ve been exposed to great ideas, interesting minds, creative thinkers. Maybe it rubbed off on me, maybe it was deep inside me all along. 10 years ago I picked up a paint brush to paint some dinosaurs for my toddler’s room and just never stopped. It’s been an amazing journey. I’ve read books, taken art workshops and when I turned 40, went to Italy with a few talented women and painted for 10 days in the cities and countryside.

I’ve been very lucky to have a close friend and mentor in Karen Hewitt Hagan, www.haganfineart.com who has a gallery on State Street and allows me to come in and get inspired by some of the best talent in Charleston and artists from all over the world. I’ve been even luckier to live in Charleston since 1998, providing some of the most amazing landscapes for an artist. I included my family in my bio because they are my biggest fans and most sincere critics-with their loving support and encouragement, I have been commissioned to paint around 50 paintings.
I believe that art is a journey, not a destination. I’m enjoying the trip.
Please take one of my cards or visit me online: www.macqueenjones.webs.com I have large works and small pieces and will work with any budget.

Michael Mulqueen, Artist

Picture
When I was young, my father kept a set of watercolors in the trunk of his car. Every so often he would pull off the side of the road near an old barn or covered bridge to make a painting and show me how to create a picture from what you see. He was my first art instructor and the one who inspired me to live a creative life.

I attended Syracuse University and graduated with a degree in illustration. I had the good fortune to study under many accomplished painters and illustrators (included Ryan Loftus, Murray Tinkleman, Ralph Steadman and Jerome Witkin. They and many others helped me hone my creative thinking and techniques. They also helped me reach new levels of confidence in my work.
My family and I relocated to Charleston, SC in 2015. The beauty of this region motivates me to paint like no other place I've lived. It’s twisting tidal creeks, marsh grasses, beautiful wildlife and welcoming people all serve as inspiration. What a great place to live and make art!

Lori Oolman, Artist

Picture
Having lived all over the country, Lori appreciates the variety and textures that nature provides. She also enjoys variety in her painting from impressionist to abstract impressionist to completely abstract. Lori's goal in painting is to elicit an emotional response with her work. She believes art should not only be seen but felt and strike a cord that resonates with the viewer.

She received her formal training at Colorado State University where her concentration was sculpture. She eventually received a B.S. degree,  followed by an IT career as a Senior Analyst working on the Space Shuttle and then for Unisys.

She returned to art in 2006 and studied painting at Minnetonka Center for the Arts, where she sought to blend her love of sculpture and painting. Many of her paintings are layered with texture and paint that reflect this merging.

Lori has exhibited at Studio 256, St. Barnabas Center for the Arts and Minnetonka Center for the Arts. Her paintings have been purchased for both residential and business use.  She currently lives on Daniel Island and is a member of The Art Guild of Daniel Island and The Charleston Artist Guild. Her website is www.loolmangallery.com.

Bill Payer, Artist

Picture
Bill Payer spent more than 40 years in television news…as a reporter, producer and news department manager in markets stretching from Columbus, Ohio to Birmingham, Buffalo to San Francisco and Tulsa to Minneapolis.  Along that journey he also did a stint as vp/general manager for a national news service.

He began painting as a release from the stress of his job and jokes that’s why the early works have a complex, dark intensity.  He mainly works with acrylics and is increasingly experimenting more with textures and multi-media.

He and his wife Roni retired to Daniel Island in June 2014.  Bill says the biggest surprise of retirement is how busy it is and how relatively little time there has been to pursue his painting.  Just to complicate that last factor he’s moving more into photography because he’s fascinated by the light and shapes of Daniel Island.

Bill recently joined the new Daniel Island Art Guild and is looking forward to learning from his more experienced colleagues as well as new opportunities to display his work.

Martha Thomas Rudisill, Artist

Picture

I am a native Charlestonian and love living on Daniel Island. My art instruction has been lessons from various artists and books. But, all my life I have tried different creative media including drawing, oils, acrylics, pastels, stained glass, copper enameling, photography, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and designing clothes. I love to make stuff, usually into something it wasn't supposed to be.

A Needlepoint Guild was formed at Grace Episcopal Church and I was asked to paint designs for kneelers on needlepoint canvas. I also had the opportunity to paint Charleston designs on needlepoint canvas for a shop downtown and that started a Cottage Business - "Needlepoint by Martha." The canvases are now all over the country and are not just Charleston designs, but a variety of commissioned subjects.

A few years ago, I began taking watercolor classes from Charles Parnelled, a Charleston watercolorist, at the Lowcountry Senior Center and am now enjoying online art classes from artists in Canada and California.

Susan Everitt, Artist

Picture
Susan Everitt has been creating art since she was a young child. After finding paint by number sets “boring”, she painted a portrait of her younger sister on a piece of cardboard with leftover paint-by-number paints and never looked back. After detours through many careers, she returned to creating fine art in 2013. Scratchboard is a favorite medium, but she also works in acrylics, oils, watercolor. pastels, colored pencils, pen and ink, and just about anything else she can get her hands on.

Susan's artwork is included in private collections throughout the United States. She is a graduate of the Ringling College of Art and Design.

Andrea Vavra, Artist

Picture
I was born in Puebla, Mexico. A city filled with culture, arts, history and colonial architecture.  I moved to the beautiful Charleston in 2009 just to find out how lucky I was for being in another city so rich with arts.

I discovered my passion for arts at a very early age and since then I haven’t stopped creating and developing my art. The mediums I use are charcoal, color pencils, ink and acrylic. I specially enjoy doing portraits of people, because I love capturing their essence and emotions.

I have been fortunate to have my own temporary gallery in Puebla.  My paintings have been displayed at the Insitituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Carafe Winemakers Puebla, and Southern Ground Music & Food Festival by Zac Brown Band. I also have done paintings for The Chippendales Las Vegas, Cirque Du Soleil performers and motocross professional athletes.

I enjoy sharing my art as well as teaching to children and the not so children. Most of my work is done by commission and if you are interested in learning more about my story and my art, visit https://www.facebook.com/andreavavraart

You can also check some of my time lapse videos at www.youtube.com/c/andreavavraart

Being an artist is a great responsibility but more than anything is a blessing that can’t be taken for granted.

Mary Wessner, Photographer

Picture
Through the power of the camera lens, Mary Wessner captures the inner essence of whatever she photographs. Whether that is the soul-searching eyes of an owl, the intimate details of a butterfly’s wings, the vibrant colors of a water lily kissed by droplets of summer rain, or the golden light of a sunrise over the water, her photographs come alive and awaken the viewer’s heart.

Growing up with parents who were avid photographers, Mary learned early how to create a photograph that brought forth emotions and fond memories. However, it wasn’t until she attended school for spiritual psychology that she felt the calling to pick up the camera again. Her spiritual studies shifted her perception of the world, and she found herself documenting life in a new way.

“I hope to preserve the history and culture of the low country through my photography. Many of my days are spent walking through the city of Charleston looking for those out of the way gems that truly show the beauty of the city.”

Daniel Island is another favorite spot to capture the natural beauty of the area.  Sunrises over the Wando Riverwalk and sunsets on Beresford Creek can be spectacular.  Mary can often be found with her camera walking around the island’s ponds looking for the egrets, herons, ibis, and other birds that call Daniel Island home.

Mary lives on Daniel Island with her husband and three beautiful cats.  Mary is also a professional portrait, pet, and event photographer.
